Chapter Eight
October 22
''I'm not cleaning up that mess," Kyna said.
By morning, all that remained of the snazards were a couple of greenish spots that smelled like the East River in July. Every time Kyna looked at the carpet, she turned a little green herself. They had spent the rest of the night in the bathroomCyrus on the floor in the corner and Kyna in the tub on a nest of blankets.
"Okay, okay!" Cyrus said as he opened the door. "Don't get your panty hose in a twist." He didn't have the stomach to clean the mess up either.
He went down the hall, grabbed the first woman he came across who was wearing an apronan elderly Spanish lady in sensible shoesand gave her thirty dollars to clean the carpet. After slipping the money into her pocket, the woman stared at the mass of buzzing flies crawling on the green goo and gave him a look.
"Uh, my girlfriend had some bad pea soup."
"Señorita very sick, yes?"
Kyna had deliveries scheduled for the next two days so they couldn't leave Seattle, but after the midnight encounter with the lizard people Cyrus insisted they move to another motel. While they were throwing their things in the suitcases, he came across the mahogany box.
"What's this?"
Kyna told him about the old man.
Cyrus raised the lid. "Jesus!"
